Monson Academy Alumni Banquet – 2012

On July 21, 2012, approximately 80 alumni & guests gathered at the Monson Gym for the annual Alumni Banquet. The gym was handsomely decorated with the school colors of black and orange.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., President Dawn MacPherson-Allen welcomed everyone to the 65th Annual Monson Academy Alumni Banquet. After the invocation given by Dawn, a delicious buffet-style meal was catered and served by Laura Auger & her crew, consisting of Swedish meatballs, grilled marinated chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, baked beans, homemade yeast rolls, and strawberry shortcake, along with coffee and cold drinks.

After dinner, the business meeting was called to order by President Dawn MacPherson-Allen, who introduced the Officers & Executive Board of the Alumni Association. At this time, Dawn also thanked all who assisted in putting on the banquet by decorating, cooking and serving the dinner. Dawn mentioned that because of all the help that showed up the previous evening to set up for the banquet, we were finished in under 2 hours. Further appreciation was extended to Susan DeLoia for selling tickets, to Jane Harris for tending the registration book and to Elaine Harris Roberts & Estella Kronholm Bennett for the display of historical memorabilia.

The reading of the Secretary’s report was dispensed with as the minutes are included with the invitations. The Treasurer’s report, given by Cynthia Jones Turner, showed a balance of $5,396.39 in the checking account and the balance in the CD was $15, 829.51 for a total of $21,225.90.

As in the past, Dawn reminded the members that it was vital to keep our mailing list updated, as invitations are returned each year due to incorrect addresses. Members were asked to please let the committee know if they knew of anyone with address changes, or anyone not receiving an invitation.

As there was no “Old Business”, Dawn proceeded directly to “New Business” starting with the annual roll call.

During the roll call, “Monson” Pottery Mugs or Fernwood Collectibles of the Academy were given to the following: The most senior lady alumna: Thelma Kurki Hamilton (Class of 1942), and the most senior alumnus: Anton Larsen, (Class of 1940); For traveling the farthest: Carolyn Storer Briggs, (Class of 1955) and Wayne Sidelinger (Class of 1945), both from North Carolina; For traveling the farthest from the 50 year class: Ruth Ranta Deneweth, who came from Michigan and, to Becky Lindie Wyman, the youngest graduate in attendance from Foxcroft Academy. Also during the Roll Call, Elizabeth Pullen Curtis spoke on behalf of the 50 year class and to the crowd’s delight, John Ponkala led the class in a rousing rendition of their class song!

The following slate-of-officers were named to serve for 2012-2013: President: Dawn MacPherson-Allen; Vice-President Richard Marshall; Secretary: Elaine Harris Roberts, and Treasurer: Cynthia Jones Turner. The Executive Committee consists of Richard Williams, Susan Greenleaf Flynn, Dorcas Benton Leavitt, Jillaine Robinson Ward, Carl Ponkala, Alan Bray, John Pullen, Nancy French Taylor, Estella Kronholm Bennett, Colby Brown and Marion Lindie Brown.

The Forrest Stevens Award: Katherine Panciera; Frank Nelson Award: Mallorie Blanchard; The Stanwood & Marie Pullen Award: Jamie Hall and the Robert B. Brown Award: Ashley Ryder.

Also, attendees and/or friends of the Academy, Lamont “Sonny” Stanchfield, June Pynes Vickers, Janice Suomi Willis, David Kelley, Rita Arnold Hopkins, Zelma Stevens, Rose Nelson and Kathryn Green.

A short discussion was held concerning changing the date of the banquet from the 3rd Saturday in July to sometime in August. The Alumni Banquet has been held at this same time for many, many years. The main concern being the parking issues that had occurred last year due to all of the other activities going on in town throughout the day. In the end, the members voted to keep the same date as the issue seems to have been resolved. In other new business, Jim Greenleaf made a motion to have the caterer do the decorating in addition to the meal, but after a brief discussion, Jim withdrew his motion.

Before the meeting was adjourned, several door prizes were awarded. The door prize of a Slate Clock donated by Sheldon Slate Company was won by Kay Brown for the second year in a row; a gift basket of various items from Bob’s Sugarhouse was won by Marie Jackson Welch and a Fernwood Collectible of Monson Academy was won by Iris Knight Freeman.

Before adjournment, Glenn Poole took a few minutes to extend thanks to Estella Kronholm Bennett for her many years of service, hard work and dedication to the Monson Historical Society. Also, Dawn reminded members that the cups on the tables were for dues donations, and finally, as the annual banquet is held on the third Saturday in July of each year, it was announced that next year’s banquet would be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013.

The business meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.

After the meeting, the attendees enjoyed socializing and viewing many old photographs and memorabilia on display.

The evening was rounded out by a spectacular fireworks display in the ball field behind the Gym sponsored by the Monson Recreation Committee.
